After receiving a bachelor degree from biology at the Department of Biology, at the Biotechnical Faculty University of Ljubljana, Nevenka Kregar Velikonja finished her Master's degree in the field of human genetics. In her PhD thesis she studied in vitro differentiation of chondrocytes and of adult mesenchymal stem cells.
She started collaborating with Educell Ltd. as a PhD student, employed at Blood transfusion centre of Slovenia. In that time she was responsible for the quality control in cell production. After her PhD defence in 2002 she has became the head of Educell's research group and in the same year also the managing director.
